Meet the NBA player-turned-artist who paints for George Clooney

When Desmond Mason was a rookie in the NBA during the 2000-2001 season, he was summoned to the league’s Midtown office for a sudden meeting with then-commissioner David Stern.

Nervously, the 198cm player for the Seattle SuperSonics headed into the boss’s office.

Turns out, Stern was interested in the baller’s burgeoning art career — and had read a Sports Illustrated article about Mason that ran while he was a senior at Oklahoma State, where he played small forward and studied studio art.

Right in time after the all-star NBA game, Athletes for Art Renaissance Tour hosted a party at Manhattan Motorcars Showroom. With sexy cars and sexy athletes, the event certainly drew a big crowd throughout last night.

With art hung all over the venue and various sections with different activities going on, there was more to do than just mingle, drink and dance. Former collegiate football player, Chris Nelson had a corner to paint a car that was to be finished by the end of the night. NBA star Jeremy Evans as well as former NBA player Desmond Mason attended the show in support of bringing athletes and artists together. Various designers showcased their items in corners as people mingled.

With a portion of the proceeds going to fund Smile Design Gallery in support of those who need dental care, the event was more than just for fun. Their first event was held in Miami and the next one will be in Paris in Spring 2015.

Tonight, from 6-11pm, Manhattan Motorcars will host the Athletes for Art Renaissance Tour, where athletes and artists are one and the same.

You would never think that your favorite basketball player or that shortstop baseball all-star is actually an artist on the side, but it just might be true. That’s what AART hopes to share with sports and art fans around the world.
